Hematology: A Complete Guide to Blood Diseases, Analysis, and Advanced Treatment
Learn when blood test changes require a hematologist and how blood disorders are diagnosed and...
Hematology evaluates disorders of blood cells, clotting and bone marrow. Noncancerous blood disorders and blood cancers require different assessment and treatment pathways. MPGCARE coordinates specialist appointments at Medical Park and Liv Hospital in Türkiye; hospital physicians determine diagnosis, suitability and treatment. The receiving center confirms the specialist, age range and available services, including any transplant or advanced therapy.
The tests below are examples selected according to symptoms, examination and previous results. They are not a standard package for every patient, and an abnormal blood count alone does not establish a cancer diagnosis.
| Condition | Symptoms and points to discuss | Tests and treatment approach selected by the physician |
|---|---|---|
| Iron-deficiency anemia | Fatigue, pallor or breathlessness; discuss heavy periods, digestive bleeding, diet and previous iron treatment. The cause matters as much as replacing iron. | CBC and red-cell indices, ferritin and selected iron studies. Gastrointestinal or gynecologic assessment when indicated; oral/IV iron depends on cause and tolerance. Do not assume every anemia needs iron. |
| Vitamin B12 or folate deficiency | Fatigue or tongue symptoms; tingling, balance or memory changes need assessment for B12 deficiency. Report diet, gastrointestinal surgery and medicines. | CBC, B12/folate and selected confirmatory or absorption-related tests. Replacement and investigation of the cause are individualized; neurologic symptoms should not be ignored. |
| Hemolytic anemia | Jaundice, dark urine, fatigue or rapid deterioration; discuss recent medicines, infections and family history. | CBC, reticulocytes, smear, bilirubin, LDH, haptoglobin and direct antiglobulin test when relevant. Treatment differs for immune, inherited or other causes. |
| Anemia related to chronic disease or kidney disease | Fatigue with chronic inflammation, infection or kidney problems; several causes may coexist. | CBC, iron status, kidney function and relevant inflammatory/other tests. Coordinate treatment of the underlying disease with the appropriate specialist. |
| Thalassemia | Inherited hemoglobin disorder with severity ranging from carrier status to transfusion needs. Provide family, transfusion and iron-overload history. | CBC, smear, hemoglobin analysis and selected genetic tests. Transfusion, iron monitoring/chelation and genetic counseling depend on the confirmed type; iron is not prescribed without evidence of deficiency. |
| Sickle cell disease | Inherited hemoglobin disorder associated with pain episodes, anemia and organ complications. Fever, chest pain, breathlessness or new neurologic symptoms need urgent care. | Hemoglobin analysis and genetic testing when needed, plus assessment of blood counts and affected organs. A specialist plans prevention, medicines and selected transfusion strategies. |
| Aplastic anemia and unexplained pancytopenia | Low levels of multiple blood-cell types may cause fatigue, infection or bleeding. Pancytopenia has several causes and does not automatically mean aplastic anemia. | CBC, smear, reticulocytes and cause-directed studies; marrow aspiration/biopsy may be necessary. Supportive care, immune-directed treatment or selected transplant evaluation requires a specialist center. |
| Condition | Symptoms and points to discuss | Tests and treatment approach selected by the physician |
|---|---|---|
| Thrombocytopenia and immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) | Easy bruising, pinpoint skin spots or mucosal bleeding; a low platelet result can also have medicine-related, infectious or other causes. | Repeat CBC/smear when appropriate and targeted secondary-cause tests. Marrow is not routine for every typical ITP case. Observation or treatment depends on bleeding, overall risk and diagnosis. |
| Hemophilia A and B | Prolonged bleeding or painful swollen joints; report family history, surgery, dental work and previous replacement treatment. | Selected clotting studies, factor VIII/IX activity, inhibitor tests and genetic counseling. The specialist confirms a prevention/treatment plan before procedures. |
| Von Willebrand disease | Nose/gum bleeding, heavy periods or bleeding after dental work/surgery; family history may help. | Von Willebrand factor antigen/activity, factor VIII and selected coagulation tests; results sometimes need repeat interpretation. Treatment and procedural precautions depend on subtype and bleeding history. |
| Venous thrombosis and selected thrombophilia assessment | One-sided leg pain/swelling may indicate DVT; sudden chest pain, breathlessness or coughing blood may indicate pulmonary embolism and require urgent local care. | Ultrasound or other imaging according to the suspected site. Anticoagulation is individualized. Inherited/antiphospholipid tests are considered only when results may change management; timing and medicines can affect results. |
| Condition | Symptoms and points to discuss | Tests and treatment approach selected by the physician |
|---|---|---|
| Acute leukemia: AML and ALL | Rapidly developing fatigue, fever, infections, bruising or bleeding can require prompt hematology assessment. Symptoms alone do not diagnose leukemia. | CBC/smear, usually marrow assessment, flow cytometry and relevant cytogenetic/molecular tests. Treatment may include chemotherapy or targeted/immune therapies; transplant is considered only for selected cases. |
| Chronic leukemia: CML and CLL | An abnormal count may be found incidentally; enlarged nodes, fatigue or sweats can occur. CML and CLL have distinct pathways. | CBC/smear, blood flow cytometry for suspected CLL and BCR::ABL1 testing for suspected CML, with further tests as indicated. Some CLL cases are monitored; CML and other cases may need targeted treatment. |
| Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma | Persistent enlarged nodes, unexplained fever, night sweats or weight loss need evaluation; enlarged nodes also have noncancerous causes. | Appropriate tissue biopsy and pathology/immunophenotyping establish subtype; CT or PET/CT and marrow assessment are selected for staging when indicated. Treatment depends on subtype, extent and patient factors. |
| Multiple myeloma and related monoclonal protein disorders | Bone pain, fractures, anemia, kidney changes or recurrent infections may occur; a monoclonal protein alone does not prove active myeloma. | Blood/urine protein studies, free light chains, CBC, calcium, kidney function, marrow and selected whole-body imaging. Distinguish MGUS, smoldering and active disease before monitoring or treatment decisions. |
| Myelodysplastic neoplasms (MDS) | Persistent low counts may cause fatigue, infections or bleeding; nutritional and other reversible causes need assessment. | CBC/smear, marrow morphology and selected cytogenetic/molecular studies. Risk and symptoms guide monitoring, transfusion support, medicines or selected transplant evaluation. |
| Myeloproliferative neoplasms: polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythemia (ET) and myelofibrosis | High blood-cell counts, thrombosis, headache, itching or an enlarged spleen may occur; reactive causes must also be assessed. | CBC/smear, selected JAK2/CALR/MPL or other studies and marrow when indicated. Diagnosis and clotting/bleeding risk guide observation, phlebotomy or medicines; not every high count is cancer. |
Consultation reviews symptoms, examination, medicines, family history and previous blood-count trends. Tests answer specific clinical questions. Marrow sampling, lymph-node biopsy, transfusion and anticancer treatment are separate procedures with their own indication, consent, risks and aftercare; they are not automatic parts of a consultation.
Send dated results with units and reference ranges, preferably showing changes over time, plus smear reports and earlier diagnoses. They may be sufficient to guide an initial review, but the physician decides whether results are current, complete and reliable enough for diagnosis or treatment. Do not arrange a broad panel without the hospital’s recommendation.
If marrow examination has already been performed, send the aspiration/biopsy report, flow cytometry, cytogenetic and molecular results. The center may request slides or tissue blocks through an agreed process. A new marrow test is not required for everyone; the specialist explains whether it is needed and why. For lymphoma, provide lymph-node/tissue pathology and relevant images.
Prepare a diagnosis and treatment timeline, pathology, staging/DICOM images, exact drug names and doses, treatment dates, response, side effects and transfusion history. With your consent, hematology coordinates with oncology, pathology, radiology and the existing treating team. Confirm who leads care, whether specialist review is needed and how a proposed plan affects current treatment. Do not interrupt treatment to seek an international opinion.
Report fever, infection, bleeding, new pain and medicine side effects promptly. During anticancer treatment or known neutropenia, fever or feeling suddenly unwell needs immediate contact with the treating team and urgent local assessment when advised. Follow the individual infection, food, activity and vaccination plan; do not start supplements or change blood thinners without medical advice.
Severe/persistent bleeding, chest pain, breathlessness at rest, fainting, new weakness or speech difficulty, rapidly worsening illness or fever during neutropenia require urgent local medical care. Do not wait for travel or an appointment with MPGCARE. Stable symptoms or a previously identified blood-count abnormality can be arranged for planned specialist review after triage.
The receiving center provides the individual written instructions for fasting, medicines and any biopsy/anesthesia preparation. Confirm a secure record-submission channel, accompanying-person needs and travel fitness. Obtain the diagnosis, medication plan, warning signs, laboratory schedule and contact details. Agree which local hematologist/oncologist can provide tests, transfusions or treatment and who reviews results between visits.
Ask which center and specialist will review your case, which tests/procedures are proposed, who explains results, and how complications and follow-up are managed. Advanced therapies, transplantation and age-specific services require explicit center confirmation. Treatment goals and expected benefit are individual; no cure, remission or permanent-result guarantee is offered.
