Pediatric Infectious Diseases
Pediatric infectious diseases assesses viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic infections and their complications. MPGCARE coordinates records and appointments with Medical Park and Liv Hospital in Türkiye. The receiving center confirms pediatric expertise, accepted ages and services; the physicians determine diagnosis and treatment.
The examples below are not a test package. Some infections can be managed locally, while severe illness needs urgent local care. Tell the hospital in advance about fever, rash, suspected contagious disease or recent exposure before travelling or entering a clinic.
Common childhood infections
| Condition | Symptoms and points to discuss | Selected tests and treatment approach |
|---|---|---|
| Viral respiratory infections | Runny nose, cough and fever; breathing, hydration and age guide urgency. | Clinical assessment; targeted viral testing when it changes care. Antibiotics do not treat uncomplicated viral infections. |
| Pneumonia | Cough, fever, rapid/labored breathing or reduced feeding. | Examination and oxygen assessment; chest imaging and laboratory/microbiology tests selected according to severity. Treatment depends on the likely cause and need for admission. |
| Acute otitis media | Ear pain, fever or irritability. | Otoscopy confirms middle-ear findings. Observation or antibiotics depends on age, severity and examination; recurrent cases may need additional review. |
| Streptococcal pharyngitis | Sore throat and fever; many sore throats are viral. | Clinical assessment and indicated rapid antigen/throat-culture testing. The clinician determines whether antibiotic treatment is needed. |
| Urinary tract infection | Pain/frequency with urination, abdominal pain or unexplained fever, especially in infants. | Appropriately collected urine for urinalysis and selected culture, preferably before antibiotics when safe. Imaging is age/risk-dependent, not automatic for every infection. |
| Gastroenteritis and dehydration | Vomiting/diarrhea, poor intake or reduced urine. | Hydration assessment; stool tests or blood tests in selected severe, persistent or exposure-related cases. Fluid care and pathogen-specific treatment are individualized. |
Serious infections and special exposures
| Condition | Symptoms and points to discuss | Selected tests and treatment approach |
|---|---|---|
| Meningitis | Fever with severe headache, neck stiffness, altered awareness or concerning infant behavior; a rash may be absent. | Urgent hospital assessment, selected blood cultures and lumbar puncture when safe/indicated. Treatment is not delayed for travel. |
| Sepsis / bloodstream infection | A rapidly worsening child, altered awareness, abnormal breathing, poor circulation or reduced urine. | Emergency assessment and selected cultures/laboratory tests while urgent treatment is arranged. Do not wait for a test result or online advice. |
| Bone or joint infection | Fever with limb/joint pain, swelling or refusal to walk/use a limb. | Examination, inflammatory markers and cultures; selected ultrasound/MRI and joint/bone sampling. Pediatric/orthopedic coordination may be required. |
| Tuberculosis infection or disease | Known TB contact, persistent cough, fever or poor growth; latent infection and active disease differ. | Risk-based TB skin/blood testing, chest imaging and selected microbiological samples. Results are interpreted with age, BCG history and exposure; treatment needs specialist follow-up. |
| Measles | Fever with cough, red eyes and rash, particularly with exposure or incomplete vaccination. | Notify the receiving service before attending; indicated PCR/serology and public-health coordination. Isolation and urgent assessment of complications may be needed. |
| Chickenpox (varicella) | A characteristic blistering rash, sometimes fever; risk is higher in immunocompromised children. | Usually clinical diagnosis, with selected laboratory confirmation for uncertain/high-risk cases. Treatment and contact precautions depend on risk and severity. |
What records should families prepare?
Bring the child’s age/weight, symptom timeline, temperatures, intake/urine changes and vaccination records. Include exact medicines/doses prescribed, allergy history, cultures/PCR results, susceptibility reports, images and previous admission records. Mention travel, animal/insect exposures, sick contacts, TB exposure and immune-modifying treatment. Use the hospital’s agreed secure channel.
Does every fever need antibiotics or extensive testing?
No. Examination, age and severity determine which tests are useful and whether antibiotics are indicated. PCR positivity or an isolated blood result needs clinical interpretation. Cultures can guide treatment, but collection must not delay emergency care. Do not use leftover antibiotics or share medicines; resistance and side effects matter.
Important reminders during prescribed treatment
Follow the child’s current prescription and agreed duration. Confirm dose measurement, storage, missed-dose instructions and who reviews culture results. Do not change the antibiotic or stop other treatment independently. Report rash, vomiting or other adverse effects, and seek urgent care for a severe reaction. Ask when improvement is expected and when reassessment is required.
Hydration, feeding and fever monitoring
Follow age-appropriate feeding and fluid advice, and watch urine output, alertness and breathing. A fall in temperature does not alone exclude serious illness. Use fever medicines only according to age/weight advice from the clinician or pharmacist; do not give aspirin to children unless specifically prescribed for another indication. Persistent vomiting, dehydration or worsening behavior needs assessment.
When should we seek urgent local care?
A baby under 3 months with a temperature of 38°C or higher needs urgent medical assessment. Difficulty breathing, blue/pale/mottled appearance, a child difficult to wake, seizures, severe dehydration, a non-blanching rash or rapidly worsening illness requires urgent care. Meningitis/sepsis can occur without a rash. Fever in a child with significant immune suppression or a central line follows an urgent individualized plan; do not wait to travel.
Contagious illness, school and family precautions
Ask the treating team about isolation, hand hygiene, respiratory precautions, return to nursery/school and care for vulnerable contacts. Advice differs by infection. Call ahead for suspected measles or another highly contagious disease so the hospital can arrange safe assessment. Do not fly or attend shared waiting areas against clinical/public-health instructions.
Vaccinations and children with reduced immunity
Provide complete vaccine records and ask about routine/catch-up vaccines and exposure-specific measures. The specialist decides whether immune status or treatment changes vaccine advice. Do not cancel all vaccines or arrange live vaccines independently for a child with significant immune suppression. Prevention and monitoring may need coordination with immunology and the local pediatric team.
Follow-up, recurrent infections and travel
Arrange who checks recovery, laboratory results and complications locally. Recurrent/unusual infections may need evaluation for underlying problems, but frequent ordinary colds do not automatically establish immune deficiency. Obtain a written diagnosis, prescription, warning signs and review date. MPGCARE coordinates specialist enquiries and complimentary transfers where appropriate; routine transport does not replace an ambulance or isolation arrangements.
