Pediatric Pulmonology and Respiratory Health
A persistent cough, repeated wheezing or difficulty keeping up with play can raise questions about a child’s respiratory health. Pediatric pulmonology assesses breathing problems in the context of age, growth, previous infections and family history. MPGCARE coordinates appointments in Türkiye and helps parents share existing records. The specialist determines the diagnosis and whether further testing is needed.
Reasons to consult a pediatric respiratory specialist
Assessment may be considered for prolonged cough, recurrent wheeze, suspected asthma, repeated lower respiratory infections or breathing symptoms that disturb sleep and activity. Not every cough is asthma, and recurrent illness does not by itself prove an immune disorder. The pattern, severity, examination and growth history guide the next steps.
What parents can prepare
Describe when symptoms began, whether the cough is wet or dry, night-time symptoms, exercise-related problems and any choking episode. Bring the child’s date of birth, growth records, previous admission summaries, radiology reports, available images and a complete medicine list. Videos of episodes may help explain a concern, but should never delay urgent care.
Age-appropriate assessment and tests
The doctor reviews the history and examines the child. Depending on the clinical question and the child’s ability to cooperate, selected tests may include spirometry, bronchodilator response or markers of airway inflammation. Asthma can be harder to confirm in younger children, so monitoring and reassessment may be needed. Allergy tests are used when relevant. Imaging, CT or bronchoscopy are not routine requirements for every child.
Asthma and recurrent wheeze
If asthma is diagnosed or suspected, the plan considers symptoms, previous attacks, triggers and treatment response. Parents are shown the correct use of the prescribed inhaler and spacer when appropriate. A written action plan explains monitoring and what to do if symptoms worsen. Medication choice and dose belong to the treating clinician; do not change treatment based on website information.
Other respiratory conditions
Persistent wet cough, recurrent pneumonia, poor growth or unusual infections may lead the specialist to investigate other causes. Selected children may need evaluation for bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, aspiration or another underlying disorder. These are possible assessment pathways, not diagnoses based on one symptom. Any advanced test or multidisciplinary referral is decided individually.
Follow-up and planning a visit from abroad
Share dated reports before booking travel and ask which originals or images to bring. Confirm the child’s age group, clinician, language and whether breathing tests are available at the chosen center. Follow-up may include symptom tracking, inhaler technique, growth and response to treatment. Agree how the local pediatrician will continue care after return. Recovery and travel suitability cannot be determined from a message alone.
Frequently asked questions
Does my child need a CT scan? Only if the specialist identifies a clinical reason.
Can one normal breathing test exclude asthma? Results must be interpreted with symptoms and may require review.
Can we stop medicines before testing? Follow the clinic’s specific preparation instructions and do not stop prescribed treatment on your own.
When not to wait for an appointment
Severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, pauses in breathing, marked drowsiness, inability to drink or sudden breathing problems after choking require urgent local medical care. Do not wait for an overseas consultation or travel while the child is acutely unwell. MPGCARE supports coordination and does not provide emergency treatment.
