Gastroenterology
MPGCARE coordinates gastroenterology assessment at Medical Park and Liv Hospital in Türkiye for digestive tract, liver, pancreatic and bile duct concerns. The receiving hospital confirms the specialist, accepted ages, available procedures and clinical scope. This page describes an adult gastroenterology pathway; children need a pediatric gastroenterology assessment. Diagnosis and treatment depend on individual findings, and no outcome is guaranteed.
Digestive and liver conditions: symptoms and diagnostic options
These are examples of conditions a gastroenterologist may assess. Tests are selected after consultation, not prescribed as a mandatory package. Symptoms overlap and a diagnosis cannot be made from this list alone.
| Condition | Symptoms and what to watch for | Tests the physician may select |
|---|---|---|
| Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) | Heartburn and regurgitation; swallowing difficulty, bleeding or unintended weight loss need prompt review. | Clinical assessment; selected gastroscopy, reflux monitoring or manometry when the diagnosis, warning signs or treatment plan require clarification. |
| Gastritis and Helicobacter pylori infection | Upper abdominal discomfort, nausea or early fullness; symptoms alone do not prove infection. | Stool antigen or urea breath testing; gastroscopy with biopsy when indicated. Medicines can affect results; the center confirms preparation and eradication testing. |
| Peptic ulcer disease | Upper abdominal pain; vomiting blood or black, tarry stools require urgent care. | Selected gastroscopy and biopsy, H. pylori testing, CBC and review of anti-inflammatory medicines. Do not stop prescribed treatment yourself. |
| Swallowing disorders / achalasia | Food sticking, regurgitation or chest discomfort; inability to swallow saliva needs urgent local assessment. | Gastroscopy, selected contrast swallow and esophageal manometry. The specialist distinguishes obstruction from a motility disorder before intervention. |
| Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) | Recurrent abdominal pain with diarrhea, constipation or both. Bleeding, anemia or weight loss should not simply be labeled IBS. | Symptom-based assessment; selected blood, celiac or stool tests to exclude other causes. Colonoscopy is not automatically needed for every patient. |
| Crohn’s disease | Persistent diarrhea, pain, weight loss or perianal problems; fever and worsening pain need rapid review. | CBC, inflammation markers, stool infection tests/calprotectin, ileocolonoscopy with biopsy and selected small-bowel imaging. Capsule testing requires assessment of narrowing risk. |
| Ulcerative colitis | Bloody diarrhea, urgency and abdominal discomfort; severe frequent bleeding or dehydration needs urgent care. | Blood tests, stool infection testing/calprotectin and colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy with biopsy as appropriate; results guide extent, treatment and surveillance. |
| Celiac disease | Diarrhea, bloating, anemia or weight loss; may occur without typical digestive symptoms. | Celiac antibodies, commonly tTG-IgA with total IgA, and selected duodenal biopsy. Discuss current gluten intake before testing; do not start a gluten-free diet on your own beforehand. |
| Persistent diarrhea / food intolerance | Record stool frequency, nocturnal symptoms, travel, antibiotics and food associations; bleeding or dehydration needs prompt assessment. | Selected blood and stool tests, celiac testing, lactose breath testing or colonoscopy with biopsy according to the history. A commercial food-IgG panel does not establish intolerance. |
| Chronic constipation / defecation disorders | Hard stools, straining or incomplete emptying; a new bowel change, bleeding or weight loss warrants review. | Medication and bowel-history review; selected blood tests, colonoscopy for relevant indications, anorectal manometry/balloon expulsion or transit studies when needed. |
| Colorectal polyps and cancer screening | Polyps may cause no symptoms. Family history, previous polyp pathology and screening history influence the plan. | Risk-based stool testing or colonoscopy; detected polyps may be removed and analyzed. A positive screening test needs follow-up; intervals depend on findings and local guidance. |
| Suspected digestive tract tumors | Unexplained anemia, weight loss, swallowing problems, jaundice or persistent bowel changes require timely assessment. | Targeted endoscopy and tissue diagnosis, then selected imaging and multidisciplinary review. A tumor marker alone cannot diagnose or exclude cancer; surgery/oncology are separate pathways. |
| Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) | Often silent, sometimes found with abnormal liver tests; metabolic risks and alcohol/medicine history matter. | Liver blood tests, metabolic assessment, selected ultrasound and fibrosis assessment using scores/elastography. Biopsy is reserved for selected uncertainty or clinical need. |
| Hepatitis B and hepatitis C | May be symptom-free; fatigue or jaundice can occur. Bring previous serology and antiviral records. | Hepatitis B serology and selected HBV DNA; hepatitis C antibody with RNA confirmation when appropriate, liver tests and fibrosis assessment. Treatment and monitoring are virus-specific. |
| Cirrhosis / advanced liver disease | Fluid swelling, jaundice or easy bleeding; vomiting blood, new confusion or severe illness needs emergency care. | Liver/kidney tests, CBC, coagulation tests, imaging and selected endoscopy. Ascites, varices and liver cancer surveillance require a specialist plan; transplant evaluation is a separate service. |
| Gallstones, bile duct stones and obstruction | Right upper abdominal pain or jaundice; fever with jaundice and pain can signal infection and needs urgent local care. | Liver tests and ultrasound, selected MRCP or endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). ERCP is mainly a therapeutic procedure for selected duct problems, not a routine screening test; gallbladder surgery is a separate referral. |
| Acute and chronic pancreatitis | Upper abdominal pain may spread to the back; severe pain with vomiting requires urgent care. | Selected lipase, other blood tests, ultrasound, CT/MRI/MRCP or EUS depending on the clinical phase and cause. An acute episode should not wait for planned international travel. |
| Pancreatic exocrine insufficiency | Oily stools, weight loss and nutrient deficiency can occur; similar symptoms have other causes. | Selected stool elastase, nutritional blood tests and pancreatic imaging. Results are interpreted with stool consistency and history; enzyme treatment and diet are individualized. |
What We Do
Consultation reviews symptoms, examination, medicines, family history and previous findings. Laboratory tests and imaging answer specific clinical questions. Gastroscopy examines the esophagus, stomach and duodenum; colonoscopy examines the large bowel and sometimes the terminal ileum. Biopsy, polyp removal, bleeding treatment, EUS or ERCP are separate interventions with their own indications, consent and risks. Not everyone needs endoscopy or a complete testing package.
Dietary support, lifestyle measures and physician-prescribed medicines may be appropriate without a procedure. Gastroenterology is distinct from general surgery and bariatric surgery. The hospital must confirm advanced endoscopy expertise and availability; this page does not promise that every method is offered at every center.
Do I need to send my previous endoscopy report?
Yes, if available: send dated gastroscopy/colonoscopy reports and images, biopsy/pathology results, polyp removal details, bowel preparation quality, ultrasound/CT/MRI reports and DICOM files. Include prior operations, allergies, medicine/dose lists, blood thinners, diabetes treatment, recent laboratory results, symptom duration and weight changes. MPGCARE confirms the secure submission channel and translation requirements; the physician decides whether an examination needs repeating.
Who gives preparation and medication instructions?
The receiving endoscopy and anesthesia team provides written instructions only after confirming the individual procedure and medical risks. Fasting, bowel cleansing, blood thinners, diabetes medicines and sedation arrangements depend on that plan; no general interval or dose is given here. Do not change medicines yourself. Confirm accompanying-person needs, post-sedation travel restrictions and readiness to travel with the center.
How are biopsy results and follow-up arranged?
An endoscopy impression may be available before the final pathology report. Agree who communicates results, how questions are answered and when follow-up occurs. The final plan may include medicine, repeat tests, nutrition support, surveillance or referral. Arrange a written handover to a suitable gastroenterologist or clinician in your country, including medication monitoring, future endoscopy dates and whom to contact for complications. Follow-up depends on local facilities and the treating team’s approval.
Symptoms that require urgent local care
Vomiting blood, black tarry stools, heavy rectal bleeding, fainting, severe or worsening abdominal pain, persistent vomiting with inability to drink, fever with jaundice, new confusion or inability to swallow saliva need urgent local assessment. Chest pain or breathlessness should not be assumed to be reflux. After an endoscopic procedure, severe pain, fever, breathing difficulty or significant bleeding also needs urgent care. Do not wait for a remote consultation or international transfer.
Questions to confirm with the hospital
Which specialist and procedure are appropriate? Are biopsy, pathology, sedation, polyp removal and any planned intervention documented in the clinical scope? Who manages complications, additional investigations and repeat visits? Confirm the actual method, risks, alternatives, results process and follow-up responsibilities in writing. No description guarantees early detection of every disease or successful treatment.
