Orthopedics, Traumatology and Bone Tumors
Orthopedics and traumatology assesses bone, joint, tendon and ligament conditions, including injuries, joint degeneration and bone tumors. MPGCARE coordinates record review and specialist appointments at Medical Park and Liv Hospital in Türkiye. The receiving center confirms the responsible specialist, age range and available services for your case; clinical decisions and care belong to the hospital physicians.
Bone tumors require a distinct assessment pathway. Benign lesions, primary bone sarcomas, cancer that has spread to bone and blood cancers involving bone are different conditions. Pain or an abnormal scan alone does not establish cancer. The tests and treatments below are examples selected by the physician, not a compulsory package for every patient.
Bone tumors and orthopedic oncology
| Condition | Symptoms and points to discuss | Diagnostic tests and individual treatment approach |
|---|---|---|
| Osteochondroma | A firm lump near a joint, local irritation or new growth/pain after skeletal maturity. | Examination and X-rays; MRI/CT if cartilage or nearby structures need assessment. Biopsy is usually unnecessary for a typical lesion. Monitoring or excision is individualized. |
| Enchondroma | Often an incidental cartilage lesion inside bone; sometimes a fracture or persistent pain. | X-rays and comparison with earlier images; MRI/CT and planned biopsy for uncertain or concerning lesions. Observation or curettage depends on symptoms and structural risk. |
| Unicameral (simple) bone cyst | Often found in children after an incidental scan or a fracture through weakened bone. | X-rays usually establish the appearance; MRI/CT or sampling if the diagnosis is uncertain. Monitoring or treatment depends on location and fracture risk. |
| Aneurysmal bone cyst | Pain, swelling or an enlarging bone lesion; usually benign but can damage bone. | X-rays and MRI/CT; specialist-planned biopsy/pathology confirms the diagnosis and excludes mimics. Treatment may include curettage or other selected procedures. |
| Osteoid osteoma | Persistent localized pain, often worse at night. Symptoms are assessed with the images. | X-rays; CT can identify the small central lesion, with MRI or biopsy in selected cases. Medicines, image-guided ablation or surgery are considered individually. |
| Giant cell tumor of bone | Pain, swelling or reduced joint movement. Usually benign, but it can damage nearby bone and needs specialist assessment. | Examination, X-rays and MRI/CT; planned biopsy with pathology usually confirms the diagnosis. Surgery and selected medicines depend on site, extent and recurrence risk. |
| Osteosarcoma | Persistent bone pain, swelling or a fracture with little trauma; symptoms alone cannot establish the diagnosis. | X-rays and MRI of the affected area, specialist-planned biopsy/pathology and staging such as chest CT and selected bone imaging. Many high-grade cases need chemotherapy and surgery. |
| Ewing sarcoma | Persistent pain or swelling in bone or soft tissue, sometimes fever. Children and adolescents need an age-appropriate sarcoma team. | X-rays, local MRI, planned biopsy with pathology and relevant molecular testing; chest CT and selected staging imaging. Chemotherapy with surgery and/or radiotherapy is individualized. |
| Chondrosarcoma | Progressive pain or a growing mass, including around the pelvis, hip or shoulder. Subtype and grade affect the plan. | X-rays, local MRI/CT, specialist-planned biopsy/pathology and selected staging imaging. Surgery is often central; other options depend on subtype, grade and extent. |
| Bone metastases and pathological fractures | New focal bone pain in a person with cancer, pain on weight-bearing or a fracture after minor injury. Bone metastases differ from primary bone sarcoma. | X-rays and selected CT/MRI, review of the primary cancer and fracture risk; tissue sampling if the diagnosis is uncertain. Orthopedics and oncology coordinate stabilization and cancer treatment. |
| Multiple myeloma involving bone | Bone pain or fractures, sometimes anemia or kidney changes; this is a blood cancer rather than a primary bone sarcoma. | Hematology-led blood count, calcium/kidney tests, protein studies and selected marrow/imaging assessment. Orthopedics evaluates instability or fractures. |
| Lymphoma involving bone | Persistent bone pain, swelling or a lesion that needs tissue diagnosis. | Selected imaging and planned biopsy with pathology/immunophenotyping; hematology coordinates staging and treatment. Orthopedics assesses structural complications. |
Hip, knee and shoulder conditions
| Condition | Symptoms and points to discuss | Diagnostic tests and individual treatment approach |
|---|---|---|
| Knee osteoarthritis (gonarthrosis) | Knee pain, stiffness and difficulty walking or climbing stairs. | Examination and weight-bearing X-rays when appropriate; MRI is not routinely required for typical osteoarthritis. Rehabilitation, medicines and selected joint replacement are discussed individually. |
| Hip osteoarthritis (coxarthrosis) | Groin/hip pain, stiffness and difficulty walking or putting on shoes. | Examination and pelvic/hip X-rays; MRI only for selected diagnostic questions. Nonsurgical care or hip replacement depends on symptoms, function and risks. |
| Avascular necrosis of the femoral head | Hip or groin pain, particularly with weight-bearing; report steroid use, previous injury and other risk factors. | X-rays and MRI to identify early changes or extent. Hip-preserving procedures or joint replacement depend on the stage and collapse. |
| Meniscus tear | Knee pain, swelling, catching or locking after twisting or with degenerative change. | Examination; X-rays assess bone/arthritis and MRI may define a tear. Rehabilitation or arthroscopic treatment depends on symptoms, tear type and associated disease. |
| Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear | A knee that gives way, with swelling after pivoting or sports injury. | Stability examination, X-rays and selected MRI for ligament and associated injuries. Rehabilitation or reconstruction depends on stability and activity goals. |
| Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury | Pain or instability after a blow to a bent knee or a fall. | Ligament examination, X-rays and selected MRI. Bracing/rehabilitation or surgery depends on severity and associated injuries. |
| Rotator cuff tear | Shoulder pain when lifting, weakness or night discomfort. | Examination, X-rays and ultrasound or MRI when needed to define a tear. Physiotherapy or selected repair depends on the tear and function. |
| Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) | Pain with progressive restriction of both active and passive shoulder movement. | Diagnosis is primarily clinical; X-rays exclude other causes. Ultrasound/MRI is selected when another condition is suspected. Treatment usually starts with pain management and mobility rehabilitation. |
Fractures, dislocations and healing problems
| Condition | Symptoms and points to discuss | Diagnostic tests and individual treatment approach |
|---|---|---|
| Traumatic fractures | Pain, swelling or deformity after an injury; severe acute injuries need local urgent care. | Examination including circulation/nerve function and X-rays. CT for selected complex fractures; immobilization or fixation depends on the injury. |
| Joint dislocation | A visibly abnormal joint, severe pain or inability to move after trauma. | Urgent examination of circulation and nerves, with X-rays and selected CT/MRI. Reduction and immobilization or surgery are arranged according to the injury. |
| Stress fracture | Localized pain related to repeated loading, sometimes with normal initial X-rays. | Examination and X-rays; MRI if a stress injury remains suspected, with CT for selected detail. Off-loading and return-to-activity planning depend on site and severity. |
| Fracture nonunion | Ongoing pain or lack of healing after a fracture; provide prior images and surgery details. | Serial X-rays, selected CT/MRI and blood tests when an underlying cause such as infection is suspected. Stabilization, grafting or other revision treatment is individualized. |
| Fracture malunion | A healed fracture with deformity, unequal length or reduced function. | Examination of alignment and limb length, X-rays and selected CT. Corrective osteotomy or other treatment is considered according to symptoms and deformity. |
Hand, foot and ankle conditions
| Condition | Symptoms and points to discuss | Diagnostic tests and individual treatment approach |
|---|---|---|
| Carpal tunnel syndrome | Numbness or tingling in the thumb and adjacent fingers, often at night, with possible grip weakness. | History and examination; nerve-conduction/EMG or ultrasound in selected cases. These tests are not compulsory for every typical case. Splinting, selected injection or nerve decompression depends on severity. |
| Ankle ligament injury / chronic ankle instability | Pain and swelling after a sprain or repeated giving way. | Ligament examination and indicated X-rays to exclude a fracture. MRI/ultrasound or stress imaging for selected persistent problems. Rehabilitation, bracing or reconstruction is individualized. |
| Achilles tendon rupture | A sudden snap at the back of the ankle, weakness pushing off or difficulty standing on tiptoe. | Clinical examination including the calf-squeeze test; ultrasound/MRI if needed to define an uncertain tear. Functional immobilization/rehabilitation or surgery depends on the case. |
| Hallux valgus (bunion) | A painful prominent bump at the base of the big toe and difficulty with footwear. | Standing examination and weight-bearing foot X-rays when planning treatment. Footwear adjustments or corrective surgery depend on symptoms and alignment. |
Pediatric orthopedics
| Condition | Symptoms and points to discuss | Diagnostic tests and individual treatment approach |
|---|---|---|
| Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) | Hip instability in infancy or a limp/limited hip movement in an older child. | Age-appropriate examination; ultrasound in young infants and X-rays as the child gets older. Harness, reduction or surgery depends on age and severity. |
| Clubfoot (talipes equinovarus) | A foot turned inward and downward from birth. | Diagnosis is mainly clinical; imaging is selected for atypical cases or planning. Specialist care may involve serial casting, a tendon procedure and bracing. |
| Leg-length discrepancy | A limp, uneven leg length or difficulty walking; report the child’s growth and previous injuries. | Standing examination with block measurement and selected long-leg X-rays/scanogram. Monitoring, shoe lift or growth-related/reconstructive surgery depends on the difference and remaining growth. |
What We Do
An orthopedic consultation reviews symptoms, examination findings, previous images, treatment, medicines and mobility. For a suspected bone tumor, an orthopedic oncology/sarcoma team may coordinate with pathology, radiology and oncology. Children require a suitable pediatric team. Confirm the named center and specialist before travel; a service listed here does not mean every hospital provides it.
How should X-rays, MRI and CT images be sent?
Contact MPGCARE to confirm the hospital’s secure submission channel and translation requirements. Send dated reports and original DICOM files, earlier images for comparison, a brief symptom timeline and details of previous operations. Include current medicines, allergies and your existing physician’s contact. The specialist decides whether the images are sufficient or need updating; a scan report alone may not answer the clinical question.
Why must a suspected bone-tumor biopsy be planned by the specialist team?
The biopsy route and site can affect later surgery. If a bone sarcoma is suspected, discuss biopsy planning with the team that will manage definitive treatment before tissue sampling or removal. The team chooses the appropriate method and coordinates pathology. A biopsy is not automatically necessary for every benign-appearing lesion. If one has already been performed, send the report and procedure details; slides or blocks are transferred only through an agreed pathology process.
How does a bone-tumor second opinion work?
State whether you need clarification of diagnosis, pathology, treatment choices, recurrence or reconstruction. Provide pathology and addenda, staging images, operation reports and a chronological summary of chemotherapy or radiotherapy when relevant. The receiving specialist confirms whether review is remote or in person and whether examination, pathology review or additional tests are needed. A second opinion is not automatic acceptance for treatment; coordinate any change with your existing team.
Bone-tumor surgery, limb preservation and reconstruction
Treatment depends on tumor type, grade, location, extent and the patient’s overall health. Discuss the proposed surgical margins, whether limb-preserving surgery is appropriate, and options for bone or joint reconstruction. An amputation may be necessary in some cases. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy have different roles in different sarcomas. Neither limb preservation nor a particular implant can be promised before specialist review; discuss cancer control, function, risks and rehabilitation together.
What should an individual written proposal include?
Request the planned consultations, pathology review, imaging and laboratory tests; any biopsy; surgery, anesthesia, implants/reconstruction and admission; medicines or oncology treatment when relevant; rehabilitation and follow-up. Ask which services and costs are included or separate and how repeat tests, complications, an extended stay or a changed plan are handled. Robotic techniques and special prostheses require individual suitability and center confirmation.
Preparation, rehabilitation and follow-up in your country
Obtain the hospital’s written instructions for medicines, fasting and any anesthesia preparation. After surgery, confirm wound care, weight-bearing limits, walking aids, exercises, clot prevention when prescribed, warning signs and the next review date. Bone-tumor follow-up also needs a case-specific surveillance plan. Agree who provides local rehabilitation and reviews results, and obtain the treatment summary and implant details before returning home.
When is urgent local care needed?
A severe injury, open wound over a fracture, sudden inability to use a limb, or a cold, pale or numb limb needs urgent local assessment. New weakness or bladder/bowel control changes with severe back pain, chest pain or sudden breathlessness are emergencies. Fever during cancer treatment or a rapidly worsening postoperative wound also needs prompt contact with the treating team. Do not wait for international travel or an online opinion.
Appointment and travel coordination
Contact the MPGCARE team to organize records and request an individual orthopedic or bone-tumor assessment. Confirm appointment availability, the clinical scope, written costs, travel fitness and assistance needs before booking. MPGCARE offers complimentary Sarp–Trabzon transfers and airport–hospital transfers for patients travelling by air; confirm the route and timing with our team. A standard transfer does not replace a medically indicated ambulance. Treatment goals, recovery and functional results are individual and cannot be guaranteed.
